YouTube Music redesign moves Search to the bottom bar

YouTube Music for Android is testing a rather big navigation change that moves Search to the bottom bar.

This YouTube Music redesign sees the magnifying glass icon removed from the top-right corner. It’s no longer between the notification bell icon and profile avatar.

Instead, you’ll find “Search” — which is now a two-tap/step action — in the bottom bar. This thin outline-style icon replaces the compass, but the actual page is identical to the old “Explore” save for one change. At the top, you have a “Search songs, artists, pod…” bar with voice and song lookup shortcuts.

Otherwise, it’s the same New releases, Charts, Mood & genres, and Podcasts grid. Then there are carousels for New albums & singles, Mood & genres, Popular episodes, Trending, and New music videos.

Once available, a prompt explains how to “Search + Explore” and that you can “Tap twice to open keyboard.” This is a needed gesture since the keyboard no longer opens automatically. Overall, this is quite nice for one-handed use. Compared to the previous design, Search can now also be accessed from Samples.

This is not widely rolled out, and we’re only seeing the new YouTube Music Search on one account.
