Two of the Fallout series’ signature drinks from the Nuka-Cola and Sunset Sarsaparilla brands have reportedly hit store shelves, giving fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise something special to sip as they play. The fictional Nuka-Cola brand of soft drinks has been part of the Fallout series since its beginning, and its legacy is reaching further into the real world.
In the series’ early days as a cRPG developed by Interplay, Nuka-Cola was available in a cool-blue bottle, but it didn’t do a lot for players, mainly serving as a bartering tool to get a few extra caps out of anyone willing to trade. Since Bethesda’s acquisition of the franchise starting with Fallout 3, and a dark-brown redesign on the product, it’s become a lot more useful, providing some basic healing and crafting possibilities. Starting with the Fallout 4 Nuka-World add-on, players have been able to brew their own Nuka-Cola varieties for some special stat boosts, and Fallout 76 also boasts several types of Nuka-Cola that can provide similar benefits.
Real-Life Official Nuka-Cola is Available Now
Now, Jones Soda Company, which has been partnering with Fallout to bring Nuka-Cola to the thirsty masses since 2009, has unveiled its newest Nuka-Cola flavor, Nuka-Grape. Announced via the soft drink manufacturer’s official website, the new flavor has apparently been spotted in grocery stores across the northeastern United States, even before marketing was released announcing its arrival. Posts from happy buyers across social media have shown both individual bottles of Nuka-Grape and 12-pack cases containing a mixed variety of bottled beverages, including the newest Nuka-Cola flavor, which are reportedly being sold for less than $20 per case.
In addition to the new grape Fallout-themed soft drink, root beer drinkers can also get in on the fun, as fans have also been finding Sunset Sarsaparilla in the wild. While not reaching as far back in the past as Nuka-Cola, which made its in-game debut in 1997, Sunset Sarsaparilla was the beverage of choice for those wandering down the New Vegas strip in Fallout: New Vegas, giving the development team at Obsidian a chance to add a little extra regional flair to their 2010 entry in the series. Both Sunset Sarsaparilla and Nuka-Grape appear to be included in the cases, with four bottles a piece, along with four bottles of a sour berry lemonade flavor of Nuka-Cola Quantum.
Both Nuka-Grape and Nuka-Cola Quantum are listed for online purchase via the soda company’s website, but as of now, Nuka-Grape is sold out entirely, and customers can only purchase empty cardboard carriers of Quantum, with no soda included. Meanwhile, some fans are hoping that Fallout 5 will get its own Sunset Sarsaparialla treatment, bringing a new brand-name product to the franchise, though fans will have a long time to wait for that, as the game has yet to even be announced, and it won’t be coming until after The Elder Scrolls 6 is out.
