The Yankees made some noise in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 1 of their American League Wild Card series against the Red Sox when they loaded the bases with nobody out.
After three straight singles, Aroldis Chapman settled in and got Giancarlo Stanton to strike out swinging, Jazz Chisholm flied out to right field and Trent Grisham foul tipped a 101.2 mph inside fastball that ended the game and gave Boston the 3-1 win.
For the Yankees, it was more than just a deflating loss.
It marked the first time in MLB postseason history that a team loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, failed to score and lose the game, according to Opta Stats.
The Yankees were in control for much of the game after Anthony Volpe hit a solo home run in the second inning off Garrett Crochet. But Aaron Boone elected to remove Max Fried in the seventh with one out for Luke Weaver, who gave up two earned runs.
The Red Sox added another run in the ninth before the Yankees threatened to walk off the game. But the threat proved to be empty.
“When you come in to the ninth inning and get three straight hits, the heart starts racing so you have to calm down, you have to take a deep breath and then go from there and then focus on each pitch,” Chapman said after the game.
The Red Sox are in the driver’s seat hading into Game 2 while the Yankees find themselves on the brink of elimination.
