The Yankees pulled off quite a buzzer-beater.
To beef up their bullpen, the Yankees acquired Giants reliever Camilo Doval just shortly before the 6 p.m. deadline.
To complete the trade, the Yankees sent San Francisco four minor league prospects: catcher Jesús Rodríguez, right-handed pitcher Trystan Vrieling, infielder Parks Harber and lefty Carlos de la Rosa.
It was a big day for the Yankees’ relief corps, which also added David Bednar from the Pirates and Jake Bird from the Rockies.
The 27-year-old Doval has been one of the best relievers in baseball since he was called up to the majors in 2021, holding an ERA under 4.00 in all but one season.
This season, he owns a 3.09 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 50 strikeouts over 46 2/3 innings. The righty has also racked up 50 saves.
Doval, a National League All-Star in 2023 when he led the Senior Circuit with 39 saves, boasts three pitches — slider, cutter and sinker — but primarily relies on his slider-cutter combination, throwing one of the two pitches 94 percent of the time.
With a good arsenal, Doval has easily whiffed over 25 percent of the hitters he’s faced each season, though walks have been a consistent thorn in his side. On the positive end of that, he has reduced his walk rate from 14.4 percent in 2024 to 12.6 percent this season.
None of the prospects heading to the Giants are in MLB Pipeline’s top-100 list. Vrieling was the highest-ranked player as the Yankees’ No. 17 minor leaguer.
