New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone isn’t worried about second baseman Jazz Chisholm’s mindset after leaving him out of the lineup for Tuesday’s Game 1 loss to the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Series.
Boone told reporters on Wednesday that he spoke to Chisholm and explained why he made the decision to leave him in the dugout.
“I don’t need him to put a happy face on it right now,” Boone said of Chisholm. “I need him to go play his tail off, which I know he’s gonna do.”
Chisholm is in the lineup for Wednesday’s Game 2, batting sixth.
The Yankees started Amed Rosario at second base in Tuesday’s game but inserted Chisholm in the eighth inning after falling behind 2-1. Rosario was 0-for-3 at the plate before exiting the game, and Chisholm flew out to right field in his lone at-bat in the ninth inning with the bases loaded as the Yankees went on to suffer a 3-1 loss in front of their home fans.
While talking to reporters after the game, Chisholm didn’t seem pleased when asked about being left out of the lineup for Game 1:
Chisholm is coming off his best season in the majors, recording career highs of 31 home runs and 80 RBI. He also led New York with 31 stolen bases, and his speed on the bases would’ve been useful in Tuesday’s game.
The Yankees were just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The lone hit from Cody Bellinger didn’t drive in a run, as Paul Goldschmidt moved from second to third because he had to ensure the ball wasn’t caught.
The Yankees will be trying to avoid elimination on Wednesday, so Chisholm and the rest of the players will have to be at the top of their game against the Red Sox.
