The upcoming X-Men MCU movie has received a big casting update.
Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has been tapped to direct an X-Men movie for Marvel Studios; however, this film isn’t expected to arrive until after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Official details for the film have not been released at this time.
What is the X-Men casting update?
According to a recent article from Variety, casting for Schreier’s X-Men movie is expected to begin soon; however, while the outlet says “the field is wide open,” Marvel is reportedly “looking for younger talent, rather than A-listers, to keep the cost down.”
Marvel’s Kevin Feige previously said that the X-Men movie will be a “youth-focused reboot.” He continued, “That may be reflected in mutant castings, and it’ll definitely be felt in the tone and perspective of the film.”
Schreier also recently told The Playlist that the new X-Men outing will be “recognizably different” than previous movies.
“Yeah, I think that’s fair to say,” he said. “There’s that red sniper dot out there somewhere, you know…But to be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that’s like a very rare and fortunate opportunity. That’s very exciting.
“…Without going into too much— really almost any detail, what I can say is, it’s just inherently interesting and complex material…The core idea of what X-Men is involves complexity. It’s an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that’s inherently interesting and complex material.”
The new X-Men movie does not have a release date at this time. The next MCU movie will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives in July 2026, before Avengers: Doomsday hits in December 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars then arrives in December 2027.
