WWE is locking down the biggest match of SummerSlam Sunday — Cody Rhodes vs John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship — and even people inside the company aren’t getting the full story.
Fightful Select reports that the result and major moments of the blockbuster showdown are on a strict need-to-know basis. As the outlet put it, “Speaking of keeping things quiet, we’re told the result and general happenings of the Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena are being kept very close to the vest. There are a number of writers and producers who have not been clued into the direction, by design.”
Cena’s seemingly face turn has also been a shocker, reportedly catching both talent and fans off guard. That turn was the first time WWE even loosely addressed the ongoing absence of The Rock and Travis Scott. While Travis Scott was supposed to have more WWE involvement earlier in the year, those plans fell apart.
WWE’s Netflix series “Unreal” had cameras rolling during Cena’s heel turn earlier this year, but not for the aftermath — something that had to be reworked due to The Rock’s absence. As of SummerSlam Sunday, WWE still hasn’t confirmed if The Rock will appear at the event, and officials have been far more successful lately at keeping last-minute surprises under wraps.
Cena is deep into his retirement tour, with only nine appearances left after SummerSlam. His August schedule is packed with SmackDown stops in Montreal, Ireland, and France. After this weekend, he’s only booked for four more U.S. shows, but WWE has him locked in for at least three more premium live events before the end of the year — including his official retirement match.
With WWE going to extreme lengths to protect the outcome of Cena vs Rhodes, it’s no wonder fans are wondering if something massive is set to go down.
