WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Has Blunt Advice For Angel Reese

WNBA star Angel Reese made headlines a few days ago when she declared that her Chicago Sky team needs to make changes or risk her leaving. This week, Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham weighed in on Reese’s strong words.

“I’m not settling for the same s−−− we did this year,” Reese said in a recent interview. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me… I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason. So it’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.”

Those remarks got Reese a scolding from the team and earned her the ire of many sports fans.

As for Cunningham, she was more straightforward with her remarks for Reese. On the latest episode of her Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham made it clear that there are “some things that you can’t say” and declared that she would always put the team before her own feelings. Cunningham asserted that you can’t just say everything that’s on your mind if it risks hurting the team in the process.

“There’s just some things that you can’t say,” Cunningham said, via TMZ Sports. “I’m a very team-first person. I always put the team before my feelings, and I think that should be a standard.

“So, you gotta protect your locker room. You can’t be saying everything you’re feeling because that’s not a good look.”

Reese’s future

For her comments, Reese was benched for a half by head coach Tyler Marsh. The team has just one game left to play before they head home until the spring.

Whether or not Reese is a part of the organization in 2026 remains to be seen.

On one hand, Reese ranks among the team’s best players. She leads the team in scoring and rebounds and is a bright spot on an otherwise terribly run organization.

On the other hand, Reese has largely demonstrated through her comments that she might have a “my way or the highway” attitude. The Sky could decide that Reese’s individual excellence might not be worth the headache – especially if a WNBA team is willing to give them more building blocks in a trade.

What do you think Reese’s future in Chicago holds for her?
