Will Taylor Swift Stop Making Music After ‘Showgirl’?

Many of us have spent the past few days processing Taylor Swift’s latest album, which is largely an ode to being super in love with (and super-horny for) her fiancé. Travis Kelce is a near-constant fixture on the album, which caused speculation that Swift — who announced her album shortly before getting engaged — might take a step back from her career once she’s married. But Swift clarified in a Monday interview that, actually, her husband-to-be is very supportive of her work.

In an interview with BBC Radio 2, host Scott Mills asked Swift about theories that she’d be retiring after The Life of a Showgirl. “Taylor, don’t tell me this is your last album,” Mills said. “What? No,” Swift quickly responded. Mills explained that he saw people saying, “Well, she’s going to get married and then she’s going to have children, and this is going to be the last album.”

Swift slammed the speculation as “a shockingly offensive thing to say.” “That’s not why people get married — so that they can quit their job,” she said. “I love the person that I am with because he loves what I do, and he loves how much I am fulfilled by making art and making music.” Swift said she and Kelce both care deeply about their careers, which has brought them closer. “That’s the coolest thing about Trav — like, he is so passionate about what he does that me being passionate about what I do, it connects us,” she said. “There’s no point in time where he’s gonna be like, ‘I’m really upset that you’re still making music.’”

The question came following a handful of social-media posts that claimed to identify conservative dog whistles in Swift’s new music, particularly pointing to her lyrics about longing for domestic bliss and the idea that she’s been “centering a man” in the album rollout. Conservative women’s magazine Evie even celebrated the album as “trad-coded.”

Amid all this discourse, it’s probably worth mentioning that Swift has endorsed several Democrats in the last decade. Anyway, her next album would be her 13th. Do you really think she’d miss out on all that Easter-egg planting?
