The robust trade market for former Seattle Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suárez now appears a little less crowded.
The New York Yankees made a deal Friday with the Colorado Rockies for Ryan McMahon, who will fill a need at the hot corner for the Bronx Bombers.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale said on social media Friday that the Yankees had “strong interest” in Suárez, but instead opted for a player who is under contract through 2027 rather than a rental for this season only.
It was the third significant trade to come down in the last two days. The Mariners broke the ice Thursday night ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline, getting 2024 All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the New York Mets made a deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Friday morning for reliever Gregory Soto.
Even with the move for Naylor, the Mariners remain keyed in on reuniting with Suárez, who is enjoying a career year with Arizona. Shortly after the Naylor trade, Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports said the team is “very much still open to a trade” for Suárez, who was reported earlier this week by Adam Jude of The Seattle Times to be the team’s top target.
Mariners still eyeing Suárez reunion even after Naylor trade
Suárez, who leads MLB with 86 RBIs and is fourth with 36 home runs, was ranked this week by ESPN as the No. 1 player who is a candidate to be traded before next Thursday’s deadline.
With the Yankees now adding McMahon, it brings down the teams who have specifically been reported in recent days to be interested in Suárez to four: the Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and the AL West-leading Houston Astros, who just lost third baseman Isaac Paredes to a hamstring strain. The Astros being in the mix could increase the urgency for the Mariners to land Suárez, as they’d no doubt want to prevent him from going to the team they’re chasing in the division.
The market for Suárez probably includes even more teams. John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, a sister outlet of Seattle Sports, reported Thursday that 12 teams had talked to the Diamondbacks about the two-time All-Star.

The Mariners have perhaps the deepest farm system in baseball to trade from, but there was a question to whether they have the MLB-ready pitching prospects that Arizona wants in order to land Suárez. That need may be lessened a bit after Seattle sent a pair of minor league pitchers, Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi, to Arizona for Naylor on Thursday night.
Whatever positions the D-backs may be looking for now, it’s likely going to take a pretty big haul to acquire just two months of Suárez, who is set to be a free agent after this season. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported Thursday that Suárez is the “crown jewel” of the trade market and the ask from Arizona for him is “a ton.”
