As it completes a week of release in theaters worldwide, director Zach Cregger‘s hotly anticipated new film, Weapons, has passed its first global box office milestone. The movie debuted last week with an incredible haul, vastly exceeding already inflated expectations. Cregger broke out a few years ago with the word-of-mouth hit Barbarian, which grossed around $45 million worldwide. Weapons has more than doubled that figure already, as it aims to challenge Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners in the long run. The movie has earned equally enthusiastic reviews as Sinners, and is bringing the summer box office season to an end on a high note.
With $60 million domestically and another $40 million from overseas markets, Weapons has grossed exactly $100 million worldwide. It’s the third horror hit in a row this year for distributor Warner Bros., following Sinners and Final Destination Bloodlines, which grossed over $600 million in combined global box office revenue a few months ago. Both movies earned scores in the 90-plus range on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, and, thanks to excellent reviews, that’s exactly where Weapons is sitting as well. It holds a 94% score on the aggregator, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Zach Cregger spins an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue in Weapons, a sophomore triumph that solidifies his status as a master of horror.”
In passing the coveted $100 million milestone at the global box office, Weapons overtook the likes of Insidious, the Evil Dead remake, and M. Night Shyamalan‘s comeback film, The Visit. Released a decade ago, the found-footage horror movie grossed $98 million worldwide in its theatrical run, against a tiny reported budget of $5 million. Shyamalan self-funded the project, after a series of critical and commercial failures pushed him back to the drawing board. He has since clawed his way back, with a series of mid-budget movies that he continues to fund himself, purely to have skin in the game.
The Old Lady Creep-Off Continues at the Box Office
Incidentally, like Weapons, The Visit also revolved around creepy old people. In the last week, Weapons overtook movies such as Coralie Fargeat‘s The Substance and Sam Raimi‘s Drag Me to Hell, fellow members of the creepy old lady cinema sub-genre of horror. The Visit earned moderately positive reviews, and follows a couple of children who are sent to live with grandparents that may or may not be harboring a dark secret. Produced on a reported budget of around $40 million, Weapons is playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
