Under interim head coach Philip Montgomery, Virginia Tech handled Wofford 38-6 for its first win in 2025.
The Hokies (1-3) outgained the Terriers (0-4) by 320 yards, 461-141, and held them to -1 rushing yards, the fewest since Florida State netted -15 in Lane Stadium in 2012. They racked up four sacks and 12 tackles for loss, too.
Tech drew first blood on Braydon Bennett’s 3-yard rushing touchdown with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter. It was the running back’s second touch in a Hokies uniform since transferring to Blacksburg from Coastal Carolina.
His score capped off a choppy four-play, 68-yard drive riddled with penalties — a facemask call on the Hokies and then targeting and hands to the face on the Terriers. P.J. Prioleau and Cameron Seldon also had receptions for 24 and 21 yards, respectively, that set up the opening touchdown.
On the next possession, Tech rode Marcellous Hawkins and Prioleau to the red zone before quarterback Kyron Drones hit wide receiver Devin Alves on a slant for a 19-yard strike. It was the first career reception for Alves, a redshirt junior from Melbourne, Fla., who shifted from defensive back to wideout in the offseason. He added a one-handed, toe-tapping catch on the sideline later.
Then, set up by a diving interception from defensive tackle Kemari Copeland, the Hokies went up 21-0 with 6:25 left in the second quarter. Drones found wide receiver Ayden Greene on another slant for an 18-yard touchdown. He had crucial third-down completions to tight ends Ja’Ricous Hairston (23 yards) and Benji Gosnell (18) to keep the drive going.
Wofford finally got on the board with Sam Spence’s 43-yard field goal with 43 seconds left in the first half. It capped off an eight-play, 35-yard drive where the Hokies bailed out the Terriers with a roughing the passer penalty on second-and-17.
Tech placekicker John Love had an opportunity to extend the lead at the end of the half, but his field goal attempt from 59 yards fell just short. He previously converted from 56 in the season opener vs. South Carolina and hit from 57 and 60 last year against Miami and Minnesota, respectively.

At intermission, the Hokies led 21-3 and had outgained the Terriers 273-52.
They tacked on a 20-yard field goal from Love on the opening possession of the second half, an 11-play, 62-yard drive that took 5:49 off the clock.
Tech extended the lead to 31-3 at the end of the third quarter when Drones punched it in from the 1-yard line, his third consecutive game with a rushing score. A 16-yard completion to Greene and a 12-yard rush from Drones opened things up during that stretch.
Spence converted another field goal for Wofford, this one from 42 yards, to make it 31-6 with 13:18 left.
Drones punched it in the end zone again with 10:52 remaining, this time from the 2-yard line. He had two chunk plays through the air on that drive to Tucker Holloway — completions of 14 and 20 yards.
The redshirt senior quarterback finished the game with a career-high 27 completions on 32 attempts for 307 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the third 300-yard passing game of his career, and he also tacked on two scores on the ground.
Eleven different players caught a pass from Drones, including 13 from running backs, led by Prioleau’s seven. It marked the most receptions by a tailback since Marcus Parker had seven against Pitt in 1997.
Tech opens ACC play next Saturday, Sept. 27, at NC State, a 7 p.m. ET kick on the CW.
