Vergil Ortiz Jr. made a statement in Texas — and Jaron “Boots” Ennis was ringside to watch it.
Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) was expected to have a tough night against Erickson Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs), but in the end he needed just two rounds to knock Lubin out Saturday night at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and successfully retain his WBC interim super welterweight title.

Ortiz rocked Lubin with a right hand in the opening minute of Round 2. The attack forced Lubin onto the ring ropes, where Ortiz continued to hammer heavy shots around and over Lubin’s guard.
Ortiz found a home for right hooks around the guard and he landed a crushing one at the 1:27 mark. As soon as the punch landed, Lubin’s guard dropped, and it was clear he was knocked out on his feet. Ortiz fired left hooks onto Lubin’s chin until the referee jumped in to save Lubin from further punishment.
Lubin had tasted defeat twice before. Jermell Charlo took him out in the opening round in 2017, and he fell short in a 2022 Fight of the Year contender against Sebastian Fundora.

After scoring 21 knockouts in a row, Ortiz went the distance in recent fights against Serhii Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov, but he was able to add another knockout to his name on Saturday.
Ennis, the WBA interim super welterweight champion, and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, flew to Fort Worth to watch Ortiz in action. Ortiz signaled for Ennis to get in the ring and face off with him after his win.
“We’re ready for the best,” Ortiz said. “We want to fight the best. “‘Boots,’ come over here.”
“I think this is the fight that has to happen,” Ortiz added. “I think this is it.”
“It’s the best fight in boxing,” Ennis said. “I think he did a great job, he looked good, but I’m going to show the world why I’m the best in the world, and I’m going to show his team. They’ve been talking all crazy. I’m going to back it up.

“I’m going to make you pay [for what your team has been saying]. I guarantee you.”
Ennis and Ortiz continued their back-and-forth in a heated faceoff, with both men declaring intentions to face one another next. Their promoters, Matchroom’s Hearn and Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya, also reiterated their hopes to make what would be one of the biggest and best fights in the sport today.
Ennis, who is normally reserved, was noticeably fired up in the faceoff with Ortiz and in the post-fight interviews that followed. “Boots” was offered a fight with Ortiz in February but chose to remain at welterweight to try and unify the division, which he did against Eimantas Stanionis in April.
Ennis faced the little-known Uisma Lima in his super welterweight debut in October, needing just two minutes to force a stoppage.

Here we go! This fight was so eagerly anticipated. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype.
It’s a southpaw-orthodox battle as Lubin, the left-hander, attempts to establish his right hand early in this contest. Ortiz fires to the body with a left hook. A pair of hooks from Ortiz now, body and then head. Ortiz breaks the guard with a left hand. Ortiz is finding success with the right hand in the final 40 seconds of the round, and the Fort Worth crowd enjoyed that attack. Now, chants of Ortiz as Ortiz goes to the body with a right hand and finds a combination upstairs.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. defends his WBC interim super welterweight title against Erickson Lubin in a battle of top contenders.
Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs) captured the WBC interim belt with a majority decision win over Serhii Bohachuk in August 2024. He defended it with a unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov this past February.
Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) was knocked out in the opening round by Jermell Charlo in his lone title challenge in 2017. His ensuing six-fight win streak was ended by Sebastian Fundora in a 2022 Fight of the Year contender for the WBC interim title. Now, after scoring three more wins on the trot, including a stoppage of Ardreal Holmes Jr. in an IBF final eliminator this past May, Lubin takes another swing at the world level.

DAZN’s Chris Mannix has Stevens up 86-85 through 9 rounds, the same as Uncrowned.
Fulghum walks Stevens onto a left hook. Stiff jab from Fulghum and a straight right. A lot of wrestling now, and the crowd continues to boo. The second minute of this round has been a write-off. The referee has to shout at them to throw some punches. Left hook on the inside for Fulghum in the final 20 seconds. Awful fight.

Brilliant right uppercut from Darius Fulghum at the end of the first minute. It was his best punch of the fight, but Stevens took it. Fulghum has done a good job of keeping the first two minutes at long range, limiting the holding on the inside and giving him the distance to work with his left hand. Fulghum hooks on the inside to end the seventh.
10-9 Fulghum, 67-66 Fulghum

DAZN’s Chris Mannix has Darius Fulghum 39-37 ahead through 4 rounds.
Nice uppercut-left hook combination on the inside for Stevens. It’s been another round with a lot of holding and little landed punches of consequence. Fulghum with some nice work up close in the final few seconds of the fifth session, working to the body and attempting to find a gap in the guard with an uppercut.

Better beginning to Round 4 for Stevens, who is attempting to double up on the jab to break the distance against the taller Fulghum and attack behind that. Right hand from Fulghum chops down on Stevens. Left hook on the inside for Stevens. Stevens continues to fire left hands on the inside. HARD right hand from Stevens connects on Fulghum’s chin in the final few seconds of Round 4.

When Fulghum is jabbing at long range, he is winning this fight comfortably. When the fight is fought at close range and on the inside, it is scrappy and uncomfortable for both. Fulghum is unable to keep the action at long range, though. Left hook for Stevens lands in the final minute.
10-9 Stevens, 29-28 Fulghum

This fight isn’t at much risk of catching fire. It’s been an ugly fair through the first four or five minutes. Fulghum’s superior jab is perhaps the difference. The referee will earn his money in this one, telling the pair to break and stop holding every few seconds. The crowd is already getting restless. Another hard round to score as pretty much nothing landed clean.
10-9 Fulghum, 20-18 Fulghum

Cagey opening to this co-feature. There’s a lot of holding and wrestling as soon as they come close. Some jabs were exchanged at long range. Nice hook on the inside for Stevens. This has already turned into a messy fight. Fulghum knocks Stevens’ head back with a right. Fulghum was warned for punching behind the head in the final few seconds of a close opening frame.
