Valve’s Gabe Newell says young people should learn how to use machine learning systems and AI, calling it a ‘cheat code’ to success.
In a rare interview with YouTuber Zalkar Saliev, Valve founder and CEO Gabe Newell spoke about his early days, current technology, and even his stance on using social media.
Saliev asked Newell what he thinks younger people should do as they’re working towards becoming successful in tech, which prompted the CEO to share his thoughts about the recent AI boom.

“I think at various points there have been significant technology transitions,” he said. “There was pre-computer and then there was post-computer. There was pre-Internet, and there was post-Internet.
“I think that it’s incredibly obvious that machine learning systems, AI systems, are going to profoundly impact pretty much every single business. So if I had to point to a technology transition to get in front of, it’s to figure out how to use AI to do anything better.
“If you want to be an accountant, learn AI. If you’re going to be an attorney, learn AI… Essentially, AI is going to be a cheat code for people who want to take advantage of it.”

Back in January 2025, Valve introduced new rules that allow AI-generated content to be uploaded to Steam. Just months later, in June, A Titanic Escape Simulator went viral with its clearly AI generated screenshots.
While there’s a great deal of controversy around the use of AI and its prevalence across every facet of life, Gabe Newell believes that it’s the future whether we like it or not.
