SALT LAKE CITY — Kroger, the parent company of Smith’s Food and Drug stores, announced a recall on two types of deli-style pasta salad on Monday.
Kroger has voluntarily recalled the Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad, which were sold in its family of stores across more than two dozen states, including Utah. The items were sold from the deli and self-service cases, the company said in a news release.
Fresh Creative Foods, the supplier of the kit’s pasta ingredient, initiated the recall due to possible listeria contamination of the pasta ingredient manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, Calif., the release states.
In addition to Smith’s grocery stores, the Kroger family of stores operates Food 4 Less and Fred Meyer stores in Utah.
“Kroger has removed these items from store shelves and initiated their customer recall notification system that alerts customers who may have purchased recalled products through register receipt tape messages and email alerts,” the release states.
Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, headache, flu-like symptoms, confusion and loss of balance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Symptoms of the most extreme form of the illness usually begin within two weeks of eating contaminated food, the CDC said.
Kroger officials urge customers who have purchased a recalled salad not to eat it, but to instead return it to a store for a full refund or replacement.
