Urgent recall over Costco’s top-selling fizz because bottles spontaneously shatter and cause glass shards to fly

Prosecco is supposed to go out with a celebratory bang — but not like this.

Costco has issued a major recall for its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after discovering that unopened bottles could spontaneously shatter, spraying dangerous shards of glass.

The recall affects bottles with item number 1879870 purchased between April 25 and August 26 at stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

In a letter to customers, the retailer warned: ‘If you have an unopened bottle, do not open it.

‘Dispose of the bottle immediately by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before placing it in the garbage to avoid risk from shattered glass.’

Customers should not return bottles to stores, but they are entitled to full refunds by presenting the recall letter at a Costco location. Because Costco tracks customer purchases, it was able to send recall letters directly to everyone who bought the affected bottles

So far, no injuries have been reported.

But one Chicago customer, Danielle Callas, told The New York Times that she’s had corks launch out on their own three times. At a bridal shower last month, she said, one cork even struck her friend in the eye as prosecco splashed across the table.

This recall follows a string of recent alerts from Costco.

Earlier this week, the retailer recalled Dubai-style chocolate from Rolling Pin Baking Company after a packaging error mislabelled wheat as gluten.

Costco has also issued a recall for Anker Power Bank’s A1257 models after experts discovered the lithium-ion battery cells could explode and cause burns.

Another alert was issued for BowFlex adjustable dumbbells after more than 100 injuries were reported.

Costco also sent out notices for 18-packs of Topo Chico Mineral Water after bottles were found contaminated with a dangerous bacteria that could lead to blood infections.

Retailers like Walmart have also had recalls — including one for 110,000 mini beauty fridges sold by Paris Hilton.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled over 57,000 burrito meals sold at Target because they contain  undeclared shrimp.

Daily Mail has reached out to Costco and Ethica Wines for comment about the recall and is awaiting response.
