Greg Gutfeld has publicly backed Jimmy Fallon – despite being known as Donald Trump’s favourite TV host – just days after the US president was told to “go f*** yourself” live on air by Fallon’s fellow late-night stars Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. Gutfeld, who fronts Fox News’ hit panel show The Five, spoke warmly of Fallon following his recent appearance on The Tonight Show. He pushed back against the idea that Fallon belongs in the same political camp as other late-night comedians who have clashed with Trump.
“People lump Fallon in with the other hosts, it’s not true,” Gutfeld said during his first show back since the NBC appearance. “He’s an apolitical guy. He didn’t enlist in the culture wars – he was drafted – and he’s resisted it as much as he can but he didn’t have a choice. And people said you’re gonna get stitched up and I said I don’t think so.
“I just don’t see him that way. I see him as a nice guy with an enormous amount of talent who wants to have a good time.
“There are critics who said oh Gutfeld’s a pitbull, he’s gonna attack him and now they’re saying it was a love fest – I can’t believe it.”
He went on to add that the tow “had a lot in common” sharing: “A lot of credit to Jimmy Fallon. He and I share something in common: we both want our viewers to go to bed not being angry. That’s a big difference from the others.”
The show of unity came as Stewart reignited his own war of words with Trump, telling the former president – whom he dubbed “boy king” – to “go f*** yourself” live on The Daily Show.
In a biting musical number backed by a full gospel choir, Stewart sang: “Go f*** yourself! Wait wait wait, bring it down, let’s bring it down, a little bit quiet… f***, f***, f*** yourself, just go f*** yourself! Everybody!”
Before launching into the song, Stewart delivered a scathing monologue aimed at what he called the “fragile and vengeful” Trump.
He also accused CBS of attempting to shield the president from criticism, referencing the recent cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“Last week, as you may have heard, CBS – which happens to have the same parent company as the network this programme currently airs on – unceremoniously cancelled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Stewart said.
Colbert himself had also told Trump to “go f*** yourself” during a recent episode, in response to the president celebrating his sacking on social media.
“On Friday Donald Trump posted, ‘I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings’.
Colbert shot back, blasting: “How dare you. How dare you, sir!”
“Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f*** yourself,” he added, staring down a camera cheekily labelled the “eloquence cam” as the audience erupted in cheers.
