President Donald Trump on Monday appeared to brag about his acting skills by citing comments from Woody Allen, the Oscar-winning director accused of sexually molesting his adopted daughter, which social media users argued was more than a little “fitting.”
Allen, whose ex-wife Mia Farrow alleged in 1992 that he had sexually abused their then-7-year-old child, recalled on the latest episode of Bill Maher’s podcast, “Club Random,” that he directed Trump in a 1998 movie — and praised his performance.
“I’m one of the few people who can say he directed Trump,” noted Allen. “I directed Trump in … ‘Celebrity,’ and he was a pleasure to work with and a very good actor. He was very polite and hit his mark and did everything correctly and had a real flair for show business.”
“If he would let me direct him now that he’s president, I think I could do wonders,” he said.
Trump shared a Variety article Monday to show those comments off on social media, but apparently failed to listen to the actual podcast: Allen had clearly intoned the “now” in wishing he could direct Trump again, suggesting he’s no fan of the president’s policies.
Allen had even stated his position clearly moments prior, stating: “I’m not a Trumper.”
Social media critics pointed this out, but also noted that both men have been accused of sexual abuse — and that the mutual admiration thus “makes sense.” They also noted that both Trump and Allen were friends with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“Both good pals of Epstein,” wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter, with another person commenting: “This is real? Wow. His brain is going to mush. Or somehow he didn’t realize just how unpopular Woody Allen is now. Then again, he was good friends with Epstein.”
“I doubt this is real but given that Woody married his daughter it would be fitting,” wrote a third user in reference to Soon-Yi Previn, Farrow’s former adoptive child. Allen, now 89 years old, married Previn in 1997 when he was 62 and she was 27.

Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, with his death and known ties to powerful figures fueling theories of a “client list.” Trump has tried to distance himself from Epstein, only to unwittingly remind people Monday of their friendship.
Trump has been well documented palling around with Epstein and allegedly wrote him a birthday message in 2003. Allen allegedly penned a birthday letter to Epstein himself in 2016, and described Epstein’s dinner parties in bizarre terms before likening his home to “Dracula’s castle.”
The Trump administration vowed in February to release additional files on Epstein, only to reverse course in July to severe public backlash. While more documents are supposedly on the way, the president is getting scorched on social media for his post.
