Trump calls new NFL kickoff rules ‘sissy’ football

President Donald Trump took aim at the NFL’s year-old change to kickoffs in a social media post, calling it “sissy” football.

Trump unleashed on the new kickoff rule in a Truth Social post early Monday, Sept. 15.

“The NFL has to get rid of that ridiculous looking new Kickoff Rule,” he wrote. “How can they make such a big and sweeping change so easily and quickly. It’s at least as dangerous as the ‘normal’ kickoff, and looks like hell. The ball is moving, and the players are not, the exact opposite of what football is all about.

“‘Sissy’ football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas? It’s like wanting to ‘roll back’ the golf ball so it doesn’t go (nearly!) as far. Fortunately, college football will remain the same, hopefully forever!!”

The NFL adopted a new kickoff rule in 2024, with the intent of increasing the number of returned kickoffs.

The kicker looks to kick the ball between the end zone and opposite 20-yard line. All players who aren’t the two returners or the kicker line up between five and 10 yards away from each other between the return team’s 30- and 40-yard lines.

Previous to the 2024 season, many kickoffs would sail into the end zone resulting in a touchback and no return.
