Troy Aikman has strong thoughts on Cowboys-Micah Parsons situation

Former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Troy Aikman spent time during Monday night’s preseason game between the Commanders and Bengals to discuss one of the biggest storylines in the NFL.

The Cowboys and star defensive end Micah Parsons have been unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension, and Aikman has been following along as the back-and-forth between the two sides has played out publicly.

Aikman shared his opinion on the Cowboys-Parsons situation during the preseason game, making it clear that he believes the Cowboys really need Micah Parsons.

“His leverage is they can’t win without him,“ Troy Aikman said. ”I do think the Cowboys are going to be better than what a lot of people project. I saw something where the pundits think that the over-under is 7.5 wins on the Cowboys. I think they’re going to be much better than that.

“But without Micah Parsons, I just don’t think they’re going to be able to slow anybody down.”

Parsons, a former Harrisburg High and Penn State star, requested a trade from the Cowboys on Aug. 1 after growing frustrated that Jerry Jones would not negotiate with his agent David Mulugheta.

Since then, the two sides have made no progress on a potential contract extension or trade.

Troy Aikman expects the process to end with Parsons getting a new deal to remain in Dallas, but he ins’t sure when that will happen.

“I mean, he is a total game-wrecker and he’s proven that,” Aikman said. “He’s certainly worth every penny that he’s ultimately going to get paid.

“The longer it goes, the more money he’s going to make. So I wouldn’t stress too much if I was him.”

Aikman did warn that ultimately no one knows what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will do. Still, he expects for a deal to eventually get worked out for Parsons to stay with the Cowboys.

Parsons was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 and has made the Pro Bowl all four of his seasons in the NFL.

He was drafted by the Cowboys with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after starring at Harrisburg High and Penn State.

“Now what are the Cowboys going to do? You think I know the answer to that? I don’t think anybody knows what Jerry’s ever going to do,” Aikman said. “Jerry has shown that he’ll pay top dollar. So, you know, this obviously could’ve been done sooner at a lower price. But the longer they wait, the price just continues to go up for Micah Parsons.

“What could they get for him if they were to trade him? It’s hard to imagine what they might be able to get for him. I mean he is a generational talent. And like I said, he’s a total game-wrecker and he’s proven that. They’ll get something done, is what I expect. I’d be shocked if they don’t prior to the season.”
