Tony Danza addresses Valerie Bertinelli’s claim he never called her

Tony Danza is addressing Valerie Bertinelli’s claim that he left her hanging on the telephone.

Bertinelli revealed on Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she once harbored a crush on the Who’s the Boss actor and even tried to make a move by leaving her phone number in his glove box. However, when Danza later joined her and host Drew Barrymore for a cooking segment, he denied ever finding her note.

“Did you ever find Val’s phone number in your glove box?” Barrymore asked Danza. To which he quickly replied, “No I did not! I think she’s full of baloney!”

Bertinelli, meanwhile, could be seen laughing good-naturedly nearby, but did not correct the actor.

Earlier in the episode, Bertinelli explained that her plan to leave her phone number for Danza wasn’t as successful as she’d hoped. “He never called me!” she added, drawing gasps from the crowd.

Barrymore, however, wasn’t surprised by the dial tone. She replied, “They never do, by the way.”

That lack of response made things even wilder when Danza appeared later on the show to teach the ladies how to make his famous date sauce.

“This is a sauce you never made for me even though I left my number in your glove box,” Bertinelli declared as she threw an arm over Danza’s shoulder. “Date sauce!”

While he didn’t remember ever finding Bertinelli’s number, Danza did recall meeting Barrymore when she was a child. “I do remember you around the corner,” he told the host. “We were neighbors when she was a little, little kid.”

He also explained the origins of his date sauce, which he typically uses to garnish pasta, meatballs, and short ribs. “I used to say, ‘Hey, come over. I’ll cook something,’” Danza said of the recipe. “And I cooked this stuff.”

In response, Bertinelli quipped back, “I don’t know, I never heard those words.”

Bertinelli has spoken openly about her dating life on The Drew Barrymore Show, revealing brief romances with the likes of Steven Spielberg and, more recently, admitting she’s never been asked on an actual first date.

“No one’s ever asked me out,” she confirmed. When asked how that was possible, Bertinelli referenced her decades-long marriage to late rocker Eddie Van Halen, noting, “I got married at 20 and I was married for 20-some odd years.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS.
