Tommy Fleetwood’s wife absent for $10 million breakthough win after age difference ‘paranoia’

It was a bit of a watered down victory for Tommy Fleetwood.

The Southport born golfer grabbed his long-awaited first PGA Tour win on Sunday at the Tour Championship and was surrounded by friends and colleagues as the emotion came over him.

However, his wife of eight years, Clare, was not there to celebrate the $10 million win.

It was later revealed that she watched from home.

Clare, 57, previously admitted in 2023 that she has felt paranoid over the public’s chatter about her and Fleetwood’s 23-year age gap.

“It kind of is and isn’t. I mean it was way more at the beginning,” she said of the gap putting a strain on the relationship on the “Performance People” podcast in 2023.

“It was kind of not actually for us, but it was just again thinking what other people are thinking about all the time and within the industry. It was kind of big news in our circle, so I was a little bit paranoid about all that, really. But not for any reason of our relationship, and I had full faith once we fell in love.”

The couple first met in 2015 through Fleetwood’s brother, and Clare went on to serve as the golfer’s agent before sparking a romantic relationship. They got married two years later.

‘We’ve got a 23-year age difference,’ she said when explaining why she turned him down in the early stages of their romance.

“Of course, I turned him down. I was like, “Don’t be stupid.”‘

Clare has two older children from a previous marriage and has a son with Fleetwood, Frankie, who lives with them in the United Arab Emirates.

Clare still manages Tommy’s golf career, which she says gives her a full picture of her husband.

“I know everything on every side – so there’s the sponsorship side, the logistics side, the PR side, the accounts side, everything,” Clare said.

“Maybe sometimes too much, you know, because then that’s all I think about sometimes, but that’s just the different dynamic. I look at one question – it might have 15 answers for me. Do you know what I mean? It’s a little bit more complicated for me because I see things, you know, like, are we going to live?

“I don’t see it as a lifestyle choice necessarily, I’ll look at it as a business choice as well.”

On Sunday, Fleetwood closed the tournament with 2-under 68 for a three-shot victory, to finally break through with the biggest title of his career.

Fleetwood had blown final-round leads at the Traveler’s Championship and St. Jude’s Championship earlier this summer.

“It’s easy to say you’re resilient but it’s hard when you have to be,” Fleetwood said. “I feel lucky I’ve had to show that side of myself. And I feel lucky that it’s paid off.”
