Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at the 63rd New York Film Festival on Monday night for a secret screening of “Marty Supreme.”
Introduced by director Josh Safdie, Chalamet briefly addressed the audience before the film began.
“This movie — in many ways, beyond being about Marty Mauser — is a love letter to New York,” Chalamet said on stage, adding that he was “so thrilled” to debut his latest film in the city.
“I went to high school down the street,” Chalamet said, referring to LaGuardia High School. “This is fucking awesome to be here.”
Set in the 1950s, the A24 sports dramedy follows young table-tennis prodigy Marty Mauser (Chalamet) as he chases his dream of becoming a champion.
“Marty Supreme” received a standing ovation as Safdie returned to the stage. He then introduced the film’s cast — including Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler Okonma and Odessa A’zion — along with his co-writer, Ronald Bronstein.
Okonma — known professionally as Tyler, the Creator — praised Safdie following the introductions. (The rapper plays a supporting role in “Marty Supreme.”)
“I play piano and put on cool clothes — I do not act at all. And this man is so good, that I trusted him and said, ‘Anything you need. I don’t want to read this script. I will show up and be there,’” Okonma said of Safdie. “Because I trust this man. And the way that he curated and handled every detail. And the team — working with y’all, it was so wonderful.”
Gesturing toward the balcony, Okonma turned to Safdie and said, “I got emotional up there because you gave me a chance, so I thank you.”
“Marty Supreme” opens in theaters on Dec. 25.
