There Are Big Concerns About Plants vs Zombies' PS5, PS4 Re-Release 1

Plants vs Zombies Replanted is out next week on the PS5 and PS4, and should be cause for celebration. After all, it’s arguably one of the greatest tower defence games ever made.

But rumours are beginning to swirl about the quality of the port, which is allegedly based on an old Windows Phone (?) build that’s been ported into Unity.

We suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if the tried and trusted gameplay held up, but Reddit claims pre-release footage is full of bugs and bad AI upscaling.

Now it’s worth noting it’s not clear which build leaked and whether this reflects the final release. A day one patch could also improve things.

But one thing worth noting is that the game’s original artist has spoken out about some of “early artwork” included in the re-release.

“These ‘early sketches’ for [Plants vs Zombies] are all BS,” said Rich Werner on X (or Twitter). “It’s funny too that Disco Zombie is part of it because we got a letter from MJ’s estate to redo it. I redesigned it on the fly in one afternoon. No possibility of an early concept.”

Our guess is that the artwork is actually taken from Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, the series’ competitive multiplayer spin-off. If that is indeed the case, then it shows the potentially shoddy nature of this product overall.

Let’s wait and see how things shake out once the full product launches on 23rd October, but perhaps hold your pre-orders for now. This may not be the slam dunk it should be.
