Major championship season concludes Sunday morning with 18 holes standing between a loaded field at Royal Portrush and the crowning of Champion Golfer of the Year at the 2025 Open Championship. The man in front after 54 holes is the same man who held the top spot on the leaderboard entering the weekend as Scottie Scheffler enters the fourth round with a four-shot lead on the field and eyes on his first Claret Jug.
A massive 2/15 favorite, Scheffler will be eyeing history Sunday. Not only can he claim the third leg of the career grand slam, he can become just the fourth golfer in history to win the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open all before age 30, joining all-time greats Gary Player, Jack Niklaus and Tiger Woods. While there are a handful of challengers who will attempt to snuff out Scheffler’s fire, none is more intriguing than Rory McIlroy. A native son of Northern Ireland, the Ulsterman holds the course record at Royal Portrush (61, set as a 16-year-old amateur) and enters the final round six shots back of the No. 1 golfer in the world. It will take a similar effort for McIlroy to make up enough ground — given Scheffler’s incredible closing ability — but with momentum and Ryder Cup-like fan support on the shores of his home nation, anything is possible.
