The Muppet Show is making a comeback with a reboot produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures. Disney+ has ordered a television event featuring special guest star Sabrina Carpenter to premiere in 2026, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the classic original series.
The variety special will serve as a backdoor pilot and, in success, would spawn a new Muppet Show television series. The event, labeled as Muppets pilot, will film in Los Angeles; it received a $1.6M tax credit from the California Film Commission last month.
From 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures, the brand-new installment will feature Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the gang as they return to the Muppet Theatre to produce a variety show.
The special is written by Albertina Rizzo and directed by Alex Timbers. The two serve as executive producers alongside Carpenter as well as Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver and Alex McAtee for Point Grey Pictures; David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter and Michael Steinbach for The Muppets Studio; and Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson.
Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel will return to reprise the majority of the iconic Muppet characters in this special, joined by additional performers. Goelz, who has been with The Muppets for over 50 years, has been part of the cast since the first The Muppet Show and originated the characters Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among many others.
The Muppet Show, created by Jim Henson, ran from 1976-81 and aired in over 100 countries and featured notable guest stars including Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Gladys Knight, Liza Minelli, Paul Simon and many others.
The series earned Emmy, Grammy, Peabody, BAFTA and numerous other awards. All five seasons of The Muppet Show are currently available to stream on Disney+.
This is the latest Muppets project for Disney+ following the Muppets Haunted Mansion special and The Muppets Mayhem series.
Rogen is repped by Principal Entertainment LA, UTA and Felker Toczek Suddleson McGinnis Ryan. Carpenter is managed by Volara and Foundation Media Partners and represented by Paradigm for film and TV.
