The Texas Rangers‘ managerial search didn’t last long, and the team didn’t have to look far.
Skip Schumaker will move from the front office, where he served as senior advisor to President of Baseball Operations Chris Young, to the dugout. Schumaker signed a four-year deal through the 2029 season.

Schumaker, 45, replaces Bruce Bochy, with whom the Rangers mutually parted ways last month after three seasons, which included winning the 2023 World Series title. Bochy has been offered an advisory role with the Rangers, but it is unclear if he will accept that.
Schumaker won NL Manager of the Year in 2023 with Miami in his rookie managerial season, leading a young Marlins team to the playoffs for only the fourth time in the franchise’s history. After a front office change above him in 2024, Schumaker left the club just before the end of the season. He joined the Rangers in a senior advisory role a couple of months later as a potential managerial successor.
Schumaker was expected to be a hot commodity for managerial openings if he didn’t agree quickly to become the Rangers’ 21st full-time manager. San Francisco, Atlanta, Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels all announced managerial vacancies in the past week.
The Rangers and Bochy agreed to after the team finished the 2025 season with an 81-81 record. It was the first .500 record ever for the franchise that began as the Washington Senators in 1961 before moving to Texas in 1972, and a first for Bochy in 28 seasons overall managing San Diego, San Francisco and Texas. It was the second straight non-winning season for the Rangers after winning the World Series.
For the 70-year-old Bochy, he finished his Rangers tenure 249-237 (.512), the third-best winning percentage in club history for any manager with at least 500 games. He remains the only one to win a World Series. And he is sixth all-time in managerial wins with 2,252 — 74 behind Joe Torre.
Schumaker spent 11 seasons in the majors as a player, mostly with St, Louis. He was part of the 2011 Cardinals team that beat the Rangers in dramatic seven-game World Series. He spent four years coaching with San Diego and St. Louis before taking on the Marlins job.
In 2023, Schumaker took over a Miami team that won 69 games the previous season and guided it to a 15-win improvement and a wild card berth. The Marlins lost the Wild Card series 2-0 to Philadelphia. Miami then changed GMs, trimmed payroll by $15 million and fell back to a 90-loss season in 2024. Schumaker announced to the team he would not return for 2025 a few days before the season ended. He joined the Rangers in November, after Will Venable left the organization to take over as the Chicago White Sox managerial job.
