A teenager has been arrested in the death of paddleboarder who was found dead two weeks ago near a Maine pond. On Wednesday at about 10:30 p.m., Maine State Police arrested a 17-year-old boy from Maine, in connection with the death of Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart. He was taken into custody without incident and taken to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. An official familiar with the investigation told ABC News that the teen was in the Crawford Pond area to spend summer vacation time with his family.Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, went paddleboarding on Crawford Pond by herself the evening of July 2. When she did not return hours later, someone called police to report her missing.The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta confirmed her cause of death as strangulation and blunt force trauma. Her death was ruled a homicide on July 5.The Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Union Fire Department were the first agencies involved in the search effort, and Maine game wardens were eventually called in to assist.Stewart’s body was found early on the morning of July 3 near what is known as 100 Acre Island, which sits in the middle of Crawford Pond and can only be accessed by boat.Stewart’s friends who had spent time with her shortly before she went missing said she was preparing to host family members at the Mic Mac Cove Campground for Fourth of July weekend. The campground, which is located near Crawford Pond, was used by investigators to access the crime scene.Kim Ware, Stewart’s sister, said Stewart had been working as a contractor but was previously a marine biologist, lobsterman and boat captain. Ware also said her sister loved the outdoors, hiking, boating, paddleboarding and yoga.
