Team continues to take things day-by-day with Matthew Stafford, but Sean McVay says QB is trending in ‘positive direction’ after practicing two days in a row; Willie Lampkin IV to miss ‘a few weeks’ after injuring knee and spraining ankle vs. Chargers

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Rams are still following a day-to-day approach with Matthew Stafford (back), but the quarterback is trending in a “positive direction” after practicing two consecutive days, according to head coach Sean McVay.

Just as he did Monday, Stafford participated in both individual and team drills in Tuesday’s practice. McVay said Stafford “looked good” Tuesday and “better than yesterday.”

“The reality is we’re trying to get our hands on this and get him to feel as good as possible,” McVay said after Tuesday’s practice. “Backs can be a volatile thing. This is definitely positive progress, but what I think you want to be able to do is say, hopefully, after a few minutes, settle down, ‘Am I still feeling good? Do I wake up tomorrow, still feeling good?’ And those are the steps that I think are the appropriate measures to be able to take. But it certainly is trending in a positive direction for us.”

McVay said he was happy with how Stafford did on Tuesday and pleased with Stafford’s movement in the pocket against the Rams’ pass rush.

“We’re going to continue to hope that he’s able to stack days and feel good, and that’s what’s happened so far,” McVay said. “I thought there was some good rushes that we had where he had to move and manipulate the pocket, activated all parts of the field. I think yesterday, it was good for him to be able to get a feel, I think it was good for him to be able to go through the whole practice. You can see as he gets himself immersed in team activities, he’s just totally present and getting his feet wet a little bit. And I thought today was definitely a positive step in the right direction.”

Lampkin out for “a few weeks” after ankle, knee injuries sustained vs. Chargers

McVay also said Tuesday that rookie offensive linemen Willie Lampkin IV will miss “a few weeks” due to an ankle sprain and a knee injury sustained against the Chargers on Saturday. Lampkin exited last Saturday’s game due to injury early in the fourth quarter.

“He got a bad ankle sprain,” McVay said. “He’s so tough. It’s kind of a knee and an ankle. He got his, I think it was his PCL. He’s so damn tough, and so it’ll be a few weeks for him.”
