CLEVELAND, Ohio — Frustration boiled over for Cleveland Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee during Monday’s 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Progressive Field, leading to a heated moment in the dugout that drew a swift reprimand from manager Stephen Vogt.
The 25-year-old right-hander, after surrendering two earned runs in a messy inning that included a walk, wild pitch, throwing error and three hits, stormed into the dugout and urged his teammates to “wake up.”
The outburst was captured on the game telecast, along with Vogt’s stern response and sideways glances from teammates Bo Naylor and José Ramírez.
“(Vogt’s) message to me was just not like that or not in that time, and he’s completely right,” Bibee acknowledged after the game. The pitcher admitted he was attempting to energize his teammates but recognized his approach was ill-timed.
The incident comes amid a difficult stretch for Cleveland, which has lost nine of its last 10 games and failed to score in three straight contests. Vogt, while understanding of the emotions, directed Bibee to “take it downstairs” to the clubhouse tunnel if he had something to say.
“It’s one of those fiery moments that happens in competition in a long season and Tanner has been and will continue to be one of our best,” Vogt said. “We know the competitive fire is what drives him. Emotions are high right now.”
Bibee’s night ended after allowing two home runs, including a solo shot to Yandy Diaz to start the seventh inning. Looking ahead, he emphasized the need to recapture the form that made him effective when the Guardians emerged as the American League’s hottest team following the All-Star break.
“I feel like fundamentally we know we’re a good baseball team,” Bibee said. “It’s just that baseball hasn’t been going our way at this time.”
