Tanker truck leaking petroleum into creek after crash west of Port Angeles

A tanker truck is leaking petroleum after it went off Highway 101 and into Indian Creek, west of Port Angeles, Friday morning.

The crash was reported by the Washington State Department of Transportation shortly before 11 a.m. At first, only the westbound lanes were closed, and traffic was alternating. But at 12:37 p.m., both directions of US 101 closed near Herrick Road. Drivers can take Joyce Piedmont Road to State Route 112, Washington State Patrol Trooper Katherine Weatherwax said.

Weatherwax said the truck driver was taken to Olympic Medical Center as a precaution.

The Washington Department of Ecology has been notified.

On Friday, Gov. Bob Ferguson released the following statement regarding the crash:

“This is a devastating accident for Indian Creek and the Elwha River. This spill is nothing short of heartbreaking for local tribes and other Washingtonians who rely on clean, healthy rivers and streams for their food and livelihoods. I am closely monitoring the situation with responding agencies — including its impact on local salmon populations —and will visit the site in the next few days.”
