COVID-19 infection might impact the generation: Sperm changes lead to increased anxiety in offspring |

A recent study by the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health has found that COVID-19 can cause changes in sperm that may impact offspring behaviour. Using a mouse model, researchers observed that male mice infected with SARS-CoV-2 before mating produced offspring who exhibited higher levels of anxiety-like behaviours. These changes were linked to alterations in non-coding RNA in sperm, …

An Ancient Infection May Play a Critical Role in Our First Moments of Life : ScienceAlert

Fragments of DNA left by viruses that infected our distant ancestors may be ‘firestarters’ for new human life, new research finds. “Our results illustrate how recently emerged… genes can confer developmentally essential functions in humans,” Stanford University biologist Raquel Fueyo and colleagues write in their paper. Fueyo and her team used a ball of stem cells induced to mimic a …

An immune-competent lung-on-a-chip for modelling the human severe influenza infection response

An immune-competent lung-on-a-chip for modelling the human severe influenza infection response

Immune-competent LOC mimics small airway cell composition The immune-competent LOC model of the small airway comprises a three-dimensional (3D), perfusable microvascular network underneath a mature, differentiated airway epithelium at an air–liquid interface (ALI). The 3D microvascular network provides a unique advantage in that it is comprised of both endothelial cells and fibroblasts in a hydrogel matrix, in which interstitial immune …

Hospital-acquired infection reporting: ‘health care’s dirty little secret’

When a hospitalized patient shows signs of a dangerous, potentially deadly infection, you’d expect clinicians to move quickly: testing to figure out what’s wrong, then treating with the right medicines. But that’s not always what happens. And the reason is often financial: Federal regulators can fine hospitals hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars if too many of their …

Child dies from complications of measles years after infection – SSPE explained

A school-age child has died from a devastating brain complication of measles in Los Angeles, highlighting the deadly consequences of declining vaccination rates. The child, who was too young to receive the measles vaccine, developed subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) – a progressive and almost always fatal brain condition that strikes years after initial measles infection.
