T-Mobile begins free ‘upgrade’ to Go5G plans

T-Mobile has made a lot of changes over the past year, some of which have raised eyebrows more than a few times. Perhaps one of the biggest changes that we saw was the carrier raising prices for all its legacy customers. Despite all the complaints, there wasn’t much that could be done, so you either stuck with the carrier or moved on.

With that said, it looks like the carrier is once again making changes without asking, migrating customers on older plans to new ones. However, this time, it appears that T-Mobile is taking a proactive approach by having a webpage dedicated to the change in order to curb some of the pushback that might occur (via Android Authority).

The company is touting this as a “free” upgrade with “no strings attached.” As far as the details go, customers on older legacy plans like Magenta Max, will be moved over to Go5G Plus. This process will start with the new billing cycle that starts after August 13. While most things will stay the same, the brand does share that there will be added benefits, like 50GB of hotspot data and 15GB of high-speed data when traveling to Canada or Mexico.

Go5G Plus customers will also be able to get better pricing on phones with upgrade too. Of course, T-Mobile states that this move is happening because it wants to provide its customers with “more value.” So, if you’re someone that needs those perks, well, you’re getting them. Naturally, there’s been some skepticism about this change.

When a company wants to give something away for free without getting something in return, it does make you wonder what it’s getting in return, especially with T-Mobile’s track record. While there’s speculation across the internet about why this is occurring, no one has been able to pin down the exact reason with evidence.

Sure, T-Mobile could really be doing this for the good of the people, but some speculate that this might affect current price protections that might be in place with older legacy plans like Price Lock. By moving over to the new Go5G Plus plan, those protections could be removed without most customers even realizing. Again, what can even be done when this move seems to be mandatory?

That’s right, from the information that’s available, there doesn’t appear to be a way to opt out of this change. You can always contact customer support to see if something can be done.
