Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse running back Malachi James will not play Friday night against Colgate, his father announced on X.
James spent last season primarily on special teams, playing in six games as a freshman. This season, he worked his way up to third string running back, playing behind fellow sophomore Yasin Willis and senior Will Nixon.
With Willis out Friday, James was set to return to the offense for the first time since receiving two carries in the Aflac Kickoff. Now, James faces the possibility of missing the rest of the season.
Willis and James’ injuries provide opportunities for sophomores Tyler Chandler and Jaden Hart, as well as freshmen Malachi Coleman and Tylik Hill to climb up the depth chart.
Friday night will show which ones offensive coordinator/running backs coach Jeff Nixon trusts the most.
