Clemson, S.C. — The football game between Syracuse and Clemson has been delayed at halftime because lightning was detected within eight miles of Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.
As of 3:10 p.m., Syracuse deputy athletics director Herm Frazier said the teams were hoping to return to the field at 3:30 p.m. and resume play at 3:45.
That would require no lightning to be detected within 8 miles of Memorial Stadium during that timeframe.
It would mean the game was delayed for 1 hours and 21 minutes with the Orange holding a 24-14 halftime lead.
The delay was first called at 2:09 p.m. because lightning was detected within eight miles of Clemson’s Memorial Stadium. The most recent lighting strike visible to reporters came at 2:40 p.m.
A 30-minute delay starts over each time lightning is detected again within that 8-mile radius.
Lighting was also visible to reporters inside the stadium at 2:17 p.m., at 2:24 p.m. and 2:33 p.m.
An alarm was played over the building’s PA system at 2:19 p.m., along with an alert suggesting “fans seek shelter immediately,” prompting the majority of the crowd to leave the stadium.
Players on both teams had just started to return to the field to warm up for the second half when the lighting delay was ruled. The players turned around and returned to their respective locker rooms.
