Over the past decade, Sydney Sweeney has put together a career that’s made her nearly inescapable: She’s on your TikTok algorithm sparking discourse about eugenics. She’s on the shriveled, pale lips of Donald Trump. If you wish, she can even be in your shower, via her bathwater-infused soap.
It seems like the more we hear about what Sweeney means — her body, her possible Republicanism, the controversy around beauty standards and race kicked off by her American Eagle ad, and her status as a political symbol to the world’s worst people — the less we know when it comes to anything substantial about her life or belief system.
In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney talked vaguely about how much she loved working and very little else. (Of acting, she said, “It’s so fun just not being yourself.”) As for her breakup with her ex-fiancé, Jonathan Davino, we got more information out of director Paul Feig than the actress herself.
Feig, who directed Sweeney in The Housemaid earlier this year, told the WSJ that the 27-year-old loves to work so much that she “really didn’t bring any issues to set.” “I mean, now everybody knows about her engagement falling apart and breaking off and all that,” he said. “I’d say, ‘Hey, are you okay?’ and she’d go, ‘I’m fine, I’m great!’ but not defensively.”
Tabloid reports of the longtime couple’s split first surfaced in March, with sources claiming Sweeney wasn’t ready to settle down and wanted to focus on her career. The exes, who got engaged in 2018, were seen dining together the following month. Sweeney has never commented on the breakup publicly and once again declined to comment in this profile, telling the WSJ, “I’m going to keep all of my personal stuff out of it.”
She also declined to talk about her attendance at the monstrous display of excess that was the Bezos-Sánchez wedding, where she strolled the Venice canals with bachelors Tom Brady and Orlando Bloom. Zero was said about the firestorm of commentary surrounding her AE ad, how she feels about being a current darling of the right, or Trump’s recent commentary about her.
What she did wax poetic about? Work, again! “It’s great to do what you love,” she said. “Because if you love it, then it doesn’t feel like work, and you want to do it every single day, all the time.” Hmmm, I feel like I’ve heard that one before? Still, glad she’s setting the record straight on that issue.
