While the months-long tabloid coverage of its stars apparently paid off for the romantic comedy Anyone But You, which emerged as a runaway hit at the end of 2023 and grossed over $200 million worldwide, similar online attention doesn’t seem to have worked in Sydney Sweeney’s favor this time around. The young star headlined the Quentin Tarantino-inspired Western Americana last week, and can now be seen in Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden alongside a host of other major names. But both films have tanked at the box office, grossing a grand total of around $2 million combined.
Eden debuted theatrically this week with only around $1 million, against a reported budget of $50 million. The movie had previously been given a theatrical run in Germany, and is already available on PVOD platforms in Europe. Eden is inspired by the true story of European settlers who abandoned civil society and set up a community on Floreana Island in the Galápagos. The film is headlined by Jude Law, with Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas joining Sweeney and Daniel Brühl in supporting roles.
Eden premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where it received mixed reviews. The movie is currently sitting at a 55% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “A cohesive theme gets marooned in Eden‘s melodramatic dramatization of a colorful true story, but it does provide a starry cast and salacious thrills as compensation.” In his review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime criticized the film’s first half, but praised Howard for straying outside his comfort zone. He wrote, “After all these years, it is exciting to see Howard attempting material so unlike anything he’s done before, and it’s a tone that looks good on the veteran director.”
Sweeney Has Several Major Projects In the Works
Last week, Sweeney’s long-delayed Americana couldn’t manage to pass the $1 million mark in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. The star is coming off of a major controversy surrounding a jeans commercial, and her political leanings. She is also filming the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, with which she broke out some years ago. Her biggest hit remains Anyone But You, and she’s now looking forward to the release of David Michôd’s boxing drama Christy, and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
