A woman was killed while walking a child to a bus stop in west Louisville, and police are looking for the shooter.Police said the shooting happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday in the area of West Chestnut Street and 10th Street, in the Russell neighborhood. It’s the same area where shots were fired last week on Jefferson County Public Schools’ first day.LMPD said there were several people at bus stops in the area when shots rang out. The woman was hit and taken to UofL Hospital, where she died. The child was not hurt, and police said they are making sure the family get the support they need. According to police, they took a 15-year-old into custody in connection to the shooting at The Academy at Shawnee. Around 2 p.m., police said that teen had been released because he was at the scene, but not involved. The shooter is still at large. He has been described as a young Black male wearing a red hoodie and black sweatpants. Just last week, another 15-year-old was arrested for firing shots in this same area with several children present. That led to the teen facing 34 charges. That investigation is on-going, and the mayor said another person fired shots, as well.LMPD is investigating whether these two shootings are related. The shootings were close to two JCPS schools, a YMCA and a library.”Kids should be able to go to school, go to the bus stop in the morning without any fear of gun violence, of having to run for their life in the morning. It’s absolutely unacceptable that these types of incidents have happened now twice in the last week,” LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said.The chief said that after the first shooting (Aug. 7), they have had officers out at the bus stop every morning through Tuesday (Aug. 12). They were not present Wednesday, the day of the second shooting.Humphrey said they decided that morning not to go back out there.”They made the decision based on the fact that that conflict last week, we had already had one of the people involved. We thought that that conflict was over with,” he said.Mayor Craig Greenberg said there are about 40,000 bus stops in the community, if you look at morning and afternoon bus routes.“It is not practical to cover every bus stop with law enforcement, but we will continue to look for ways that we can collaborate more to have more presence out and about during the times when busses are picking up and dropping off kids,” Greenberg said. “We’re going to continue to be in the community, working to get information about this, these crimes and working with young people after school to prevent crimes from happening in the future.”The shooting scene was clear and all roads had reopened just before 10:30 a.m.A councilmember told WLKY there was supposed to be a meeting Wednesday to talk about last week’s shooting, and now they will be discussing both.
