“Superman” will fly onto HBO Max on Sept. 19, writer-director James Gunn announced on his social media pages. The film earned $615 million at the worldwide box office over the summer, making it the year’s highest-grossing comic book movie so far.
Warner Bros. released “Superman” in theaters worldwide on July 11. In its opening weekend, the comic book tentpole grossed $125 million at the domestic box office and remained the No. 1 movie in the world for two weeks until Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” dethroned it at the end of the month.
Directed by James Gunn, “Superman” is the inaugural film for Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe. Headed by Gunn and producer Peter Safran, DC Studios will make interconnected films and series based off the brand’s storied comic book characters. It is Warner Bros.’ second attempt at making a shared DC Cinematic Universe, as its DC Extended Universe — which included titles such as “Man of Steel,” “Wonder Woman,” “Justice League,” “Black Adam” and Gunn’s own “The Suicide Squad” — became dormant following the release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023.
“Superman” restarts the universe, with David Corenswet playing the titular hero alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific. The cast also includes Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent, Neva Howell as Ma Kent, Bradley Cooper as Jor-El and Alan Tudyk as Superman’s Robot #4 (later named Gary). Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and John Cena’s Peacemaker — the only character conspicuously carried over from the DC Extended Universe — also make appearances.
On HBO Max, “Superman” will join other DC titles like “The Penguin” and “Peacemaker.”
