DC Studios’ Superman has racked up 13 million global viewers since premiering on HBO Max on September 19. The streamer says that marks the largest 10-day audience for a pay-one film since December 2023, when Barbie played.
During the James Gunn film’s premiere week on HBO Max, other Superman titles saw a corresponding spike in global viewership. For the period measured between September 8-14 and September 15-21, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story grew 670%, Superman: The Movie 155%, Superman Returns 120% and Man of Steel 40%.
Gunn’s Superman landed on HBO Max after a 70-day theatrical window. The tentpole starring David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan had a 35-day theatrical window to Premium VOD as Gunn wanted the movie made available in homes in time for the premiere of Season 2 of HBO Max’s Peacemaker. Last weekend’s sixth episode of Season 2 served as a bridge to the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which Gunn will shoot next spring in time for a July 9, 2027 release date.
Superman opened to $125M domestic, $220M global. The film ended its theatrical run at $354.1M stateside and $615.6M worldwide.
Gunn recently told Howard Stern that Superman: Man of Tomorrow is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.”
He added, “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
The final episode of Peacemaker Season 2 begins streaming October 9.
