‘Superman 2’ Gets a Disappointing Update From James Gunn

James Gunn is known for using social media to answer fan questions and theories about the DCU and Superman, but his latest update has left fans even more confused about the recently revealed Superman 2. Following Superman‘s box office success amidst ongoing superhero fatigue, the DCU now has a strong foundation beneath it as the franchise moves fully into the Gods & Monsters phase of movies and shows. Films like Supergirl and Clayface are moving ahead swiftly, while Lanterns is also in production. James Gunn recently added to the ongoing slate of projects by announcing that a Superman sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, is in the works at DC Studios. However, Gunn is about to get a visit from the Hammer of Borovia for his announcement, as he recently had to clarify the future of Superman in the DCU.

James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow announcement got the entire DCU fan base excited, but his latest post has substantially knocked down that initial excitement. Shared via @DanielRPK on X (formerly Twitter), Gunn was once again on a crusade to answer fan questions on social media. Regarding his Man of Tomorrow announcement, the writer/director was asked whether the film is Superman 2, or if it was just promoting one of the other upcoming DCU projects that Corenswet’s Superman will appear in. As anxious as everyone is for Superman 2, Gun’s answer unfortunately falls towards the latter option.

“Yes, yes, sorry,” Gunn’s response began. “This is the same movie. Superman has a major role.” Putting the final nail in the coffin, James Gunn continued, “It’s not ‘Superman 2.'” Even before Gunn’s confusing announcement, David Corenswet’s DCU future had already been confirmed. The Man of Steel is already set to return to the big screen as a supporting character in next year’s Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock. The film also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo and will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Will ‘Superman’ Get a Sequel?

In the world of endless superhero sequels, setting up more superhero sequels, followed by superhero reboots, which are, in turn, followed by more sequels, the lack of Superman 2 confirmation might be surprising to fans. Superman was a big success for DC Studios. It earned a strong 83% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% audience rating. At the box office, it grossed over $600 million worldwide, despite underperforming internationally.

It’s safe to say that audiences are hungry for more Superman, but it might be a while before David Corenswet headlines his own film again. However, the actor is set to appear in several more DCU projects. While it wasn’t the Superman 2 announcement we were hoping for, Gunn previously confirmed that he’s working on the next entry in the Super family saga. This movie, whoever it focuses on, will undoubtedly feature the Man of Steel in some capacity. From the promo art released by Gunn, we know that Superman and Lex Luthor will play a big role in the film, but who will be the central character? Could it be Supergirl? Maybe even Power Girl? Krypto? Or even Ma and Pa Kent?
