Nintendo drew a lot of flak in 2020 for bundling two iconic Mario games (and Sunshine) into a limited release, but nobody expected the console giant to repackage Super Mario Galaxy, along with its sequel, into another bundle just five years later. This time, for the low, low price of $70.
Or $40, if you just want Super Mario Galaxy 2.
But what’s even more egregious is that these ports look worse on the Switch 2 than they did on the Wii. As pointed out by u/RedditRedditReddit64, who attached side-by-side screenshots as evidence, the Switch 2 footage looks far less detailed, stripping away the environment’s finer textures and making things appear far flatter.

“Some of them are a straight improvement in detail, while others look completely washed out,” they explained. “Take these two examples of the diamond plate metal and textured soil from the original games, which have been replaced by basically non-existent textures, and they look objectively worse.
“I know video compression may have some effect on this obviously, but it’s clear the textures have been changed for the worse as well […] I HOPE that these are simply unfinished textures that happened to slip through the videos and are awaiting replacements before release, but I have doubts”.
These are far from the only examples that have been uncovered. Twitter user @PkMOfTheDay also compiled a few screenshots of the new Super Mario Galaxy port, placing them side-by-side with footage lifted from the 3D All Stars version, and again, the visuals are flatter and less detailed.
“I’m actually shocked seeing they removed and made textures more simple,” they said. “For the $40 price the storybook parts and 4K are not enough seeing how parts of the game look worse”.
It’s hardly a promising sign, though many are holding out hope that it’s just a result of YouTube’s image compression. While that’s likely a contributor, it’s hard to imagine losing that much detail with compression alone, especially when Nintendo has been boasting about the updated textures as a selling point to differentiate this version from the 3D All Stars port.
Whatever the reality is, these comparisons have only brought more backlash to the price tag, stirring up even more controversy around an already unfavourable port.
