It appears the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty won’t be the last word on the series after all.
Hours after the season three finale debuted on Prime Video, the Amazon-owned streamer announced it has greenlit a feature-length installment that will serve as the series ender. Jenny Han, author of the novels on which the series is based, will write alongside Sarah Kucserka and direct the movie, which will wrap up Belly’s (Lola Tung) story.
“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
“The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” said Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios in a joint statement. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”
Story details for the movie are being kept quiet for now. However, fans who have watched the finale episode (spoiler alert!) noted that the book’s epilogue and Belly’s wedding was never shown, even after she and her pick finally confessed their true feelings. In the closing credits of the show, a note to fans from Han was shown seemingly teasing that there could be a return to Cousins in the future.
When asked about revisiting the series, Han told THR, “I love the world. I love the cast and the people I work with, so it’s really all a matter of the right story and putting that story first.” She also emphasized that season three was “the final season of the show.”
For the final season, the series traveled from the beach to Paris with Belly reeling from the end of her relationship to Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalengo), breaking up on what was supposed to be their wedding day following a confession from Conrad (Chris Briney) that he still loved her. Despite distancing herself from everyone and creating a new life for herself in Paris, Conrad visits Belly on her birthday, where the two eventually address their past and feelings for each other. It is then that Belly realizes that her heart remains with Conrad and she chooses to be with him.
When reflecting on the ending, Tung told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the season premiere that she’s happy with where Belly’s story ends in the show. “It was really fun to feel like it was a little bit more of a mature journey or she feels more grown up, and you can sort of tell in the decisions that she makes,” she said. “But it was really fun to film and really fun to see sort of play out.”
Han and Kucserka served as co-showrunners on season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty. They executive produce with Karen Rosenfelt and Paul Lee, Hope Hartman and Mads Hansen of Wiip.
Sept. 17, 5:20 p.m. This story has been updated with the correction that Sarah Kucserka will also co-write the film.
