Storms already are moving across the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula and the eastern U.P. Farther south, another batch of possibly severe weather is working its way across Lake Michigan and heading toward West Michigan.

As these storms continue to pop up this afternoon, wind damage appears to be the main threat, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts could reach up to 60 mph.
Today’s NWS forecast notes say that while the ingredients are all in place for potential severe weather this afternoon and early evening, it’s “not a slam dunk” as to forecasting whether thunderstorms and hail will actually materialize.
Some places could see just a few pop-up showers or quick thunderstorms. Others could see heavy rain that causes some short-term flooding.
“A threat for severe weather exists today,” NWS meteorologists in Grand Rapids said. “We expect storms to develop over Lake Michigan in the midday hours. Storms should move into Western Lower Michigan in the early afternoon.”
“1 p.m. to 8 p.m. is the expected time frame of storms in southwest Lower Michigan. The main threat from storms that develop today will be strong winds to 50 to 60 mph. Locally heavy rain is expected as well that may result in localized short term flooding of low spots.”
If severe weather does organize itself, it will likely look like a severe line of storms moving from west to east. These are the storms that would pack the damaging winds.
