From a galaxy far, far away to somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea…
Director Shawn Levy has revealed the first look at “Star Wars: Starfighter,” a spinoff in the space opera series starring Ryan Gosling and newcomer Flynn Gray. In the behind-the-scenes shot, Gosling and Gray’s characters are wearing battered clothing while adrift on some sort of water craft. This oceanic location (Levy captioned the photo “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea and tagged the Instagram post in Sardinia, Italy) is a shift from prior “Star Wars” adventures, set mostly across the galaxy on desert planets like Tatooine and Jakku.
Plot details are unclear but Lucasfilm previously confirmed that “Starfighter” will be an “entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in ‘Star Wars.’” The standalone film, which focuses on new characters in the sci-fi universe, is reportedly set about five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which ends with a victory for the Resistance.
Though not pictured in Levy’s social media post, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre (“Rebel Ridge”), Simon Bird (“The Inbetweeners”), Jamael Westman (“Good Grief”) and Daniel Ings (“The Gentlemen”) will round out the cast of the film. Jonathan Tropper (“The Adam Project”) is writing the screenplay; Levy will also produce with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
“Star Wars: Starfighter” is slated to hit the big screen on May 28, 2027. That’s roughly a year after another spinoff adventure, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which is scheduled for May 2026 and will mark the first “Star Wars” theatrical feature in seven years, since “The Rise of Skywalker.”
When production began earlier in the fall, Levy described a “profound sense of excitement and honor” to helm a “Star Wars” story.
“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible ‘Star Wars’ galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. ‘Star Wars’ shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever,” Levy said. “To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
