While more and more Xbox games are being released on the PS5, one Xbox-exclusive game that still hasn’t been announced for the PS5 is Bethesda’s Starfield. Given Microsoft’s multi-platform publishing stance, it’s just a matter of when the sci-fi RPG will be available on Sony’s console, rather than if it’ll ever be released.
For those on PS5 hoping to play Starfield on their console this year, that won’t be happening just yet.
Starfield on PS5 Won’t Be Releasing in 2025
According to our sources, MP1st was told that Starfield won’t be released in 2025, partly due to the RPG’s weak sales of the first expansion, Shattered Space. Instead, Microsoft is leaning toward releasing the Starfield PS5 version in Spring 2026. For those not in the US, spring starts the middle of March and runs until mid-June.
From what we were told, Starfield’s release on PS5 is planned to coincide with the game’s second expansion and other quality-of-life updates. We are also not expecting any announcement about the PS5 version of the game at this August’s gamescom, so don’t expect it to be shadowdropped like Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered release a few months ago, which is something we reported on accurately (for anyone keeping score).
Similar to any release and marketing plan, there are numerous moving parts, and things are constantly changing. However, based on the information we have currently, we do not expect Starfield to be released this year.
As for the next former Xbox-exclusive hitting the PS5, it’s Gears of War: Reloaded due for release this August. Other reported Xbox games hitting the PS5, though unannounced, include Gears of War: E-Day and State of Decay 3, according to a game developer working on the titles.
While Starfield’s first expansion might not have done as well as Bethesda expected, the base game is still a fantastic RPG. Our review of the Xbox version was very glowing, and said, “. It has everything you’d want from a Bethesda game: a deep and prosperous universe filled with endless possibilities and limitless potential.”
