Whether you consider it a true Parasite Eve sequel or not, it’s been about 15 years since The 3rd Birthday released on the PSP to a mixed reception. (We loved it, but opinions vary wildly.)
We think it’s probably safe to conclude at this point that Square Enix doesn’t really intend to do anything with the franchise for the foreseeable future, but you can always rely on a Chinese developer to pick up the slack.
Chongqing-based team IceSitruuna has announced Parasite Mutant for PS5, which – let’s be honest – is basically a successor to Square Enix’s popular PS1 property. It’s due out in 2026 on Sony’s system.
Here’s how the blurb describes it:
“Parasite Mutant is a science-fiction horror RPG set in the distant future. Psionic agent Nova was sent on a mission to an abandoned and secluded island city filled with horrifying creatures, not knowing that what happened on the island will completely change her fate.”
Amusingly, the press release goes on to introduce the Active Time Chains battle system, which is basically the dev’s twist on the original Parasite Eve’s Active Time Bar. As in the original game, you can move the protagonist around and dodge at all times, but need to wait for the gauge to fill before you can actually attack.
Other key features of the game include its “semi-realistic” anime art style, but the dev says it’s including a CRT filter to retain that late 90s feel. There’ll also be outfits to unlock and support for New Game +.
Promising stuff, then? We actually think this looks great, and while we’d prefer to see Aya Brea return for real, this should scratch the same itch for now.
