Spider Man-Magic The Gathering New Cards Revealed, Spoilers

Wizards of the Coast is launching Magic: The Gathering‘s new set centered around Marvel‘s Spider-Man later this month, and Variety has an exclusive first look at two of the cards from the new web-slinger collection.

Per the Hasbro-owned Wizards of the Coast, this full set release “marks the beginning of a new chapter” in Magic’s long-standing partnership with Marvel, which was amplified last year with the drop of a highly popular collection of Secret Lair cards — one-off, limited time offerings that are distinguished from the main cycle of Magic cards that are regularly released.

Releasing Sept. 26, the Spidey set “invites players into a web of thrilling encounters, with cards featuring Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, along with villains including Venom, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and more” and “brings the excitement of high-flying action and heroics to dynamic card treatments through original artwork and gameplay mechanics that reflect Spider-Man’s agility, ingenuity, and unbreakable sense of responsibility.”

The set includes iconic Spider-Man comic book images done by artists including Jack Kirby, Todd McFarlane, John Romita Sr., Mike Zeck and Bob Mcleod. Additional special features of the set include Showcase Scene cards, “which combine to form a stunning scene that looks like it came straight out of a comic book,” as well as the introduction of the MCU’s Infinity Stones to the world of Magic with three versions of the Soul Stone card.

Magic’s collaboration with Marvel is one of multiple partnerships Wizards of the Coast has made in recent years as it builds up its “Universes Beyond” line of cards, which focus on IP from outside the Magic universe. Recent high-profile licensing deals include Wizards teaming up with video game developer Square Enix for an entire collection of cards based on the 16-game “Final Fantasy” franchise, and a collaboration with Sega for a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed Secret Lair drop.

Spider-Man No More

Harkening back to the classic storyline which introduced the world to Kingpin, this new card features art from Aniekan Udofia extremely reminiscent of the panel in which Spider-Man abandons his costume. Along with the already spoiled Path to Exile, players can now relive this arc within Magic: the Gathering.

Wall Crawl

A bit of classic Spider-man traversal mixed with some classic Magic flavor, Wall Crawl shows no wall is a match for the web-slinger from NYC. Younger players may not realize, but before the game introduced the keyword “Defender,” the creature type “wall” had the additional rule that they couldn’t attack.
