Although Game of Thrones had its share of uncomfortable incestuous plot lines, Sophie Turner and Kit Harington avoided the worst of it… until now.
Reuniting with her former onscreen brother/cousin in writer/director Natasha Kermani‘s upcoming gothic horror film The Dreadful, Turner admitted she and Harington were “both retching” when it came time to shoot the movie’s intimate scenes.
“I’d just got the script for this amazing gothic horror called The Dreadful, and I was reading through all the characters,” she recalled on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “And I’m producing it, so the director was asking me, ‘Who do you think?’ And immediately, the first person I thought of was Kit.
“And so, I sent the script to Kit, and he kind of sent me a message back going like, ‘Yeah, I’d love to, but this is going to be really f***ing weird, Soph.’ And I was like, what is he talking about? Then I was reading it, and I’m like, ‘Kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex scene.’ And then I’m like, oh shoot, that’s my brother. But it’s such a good script that he’s like, ‘We kind of have to do it.’”
Turner continued, “So, then we put it out of our minds, and then we get on set, and it’s the first kissing scene. And we are both retching, like really, it is vile. It was the worst, another really bad moment in my career.”
Set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, The Dreadful follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden), who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns, he will set off a sequence of events that become a turning point for Anne.
The onscreen reunion comes after Turner played Sansa Stark and Harington starred as her brother Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019.
