Aaron Glenn came to the Detroit Lions as their defensive coordinator when they hired Dan Campbell to be their head coach. Glenn will have to remind himself that building up the Lions, one of the historically worst franchises in the NFL, wasn’t easy or fast.
It took Campbell a long time to get his first win. The 2021 Lions started the season 0-10-1. Eventually, the Lions became a Super Bowl contender, but it was a difficult process. It’s a lesson that might serve Glenn well this season in his first year as New York Jets head coach.

The Jets are one of the worst franchises in the NFL and one of the worst teams in 2025. They couldn’t even beat an 0-3 Miami Dolphins team on Monday night. The Dolphins won 27-21, though it was costly with Tyreek Hill leaving with a graphic knee injury in the third quarter. But the Dolphins were clearly the better team. That’s not great news for the Jets going forward.
The Jets are one of three winless teams left in the NFL, joining the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans. They’re a mistake-prone team that probably doesn’t have enough talent to compete for at least another season or two. On Monday night, they didn’t look that well coached either.
Glenn showed some frustration Monday night as the Jets looked bad against the Dolphins. There will be more frustrating moments ahead. Turning around the Jets will be a tough job. Getting through the rest of the season might be tough, just like that Lions season Glenn was part of a few years back.

Jets continue to make mistakes
The Jets didn’t look terrible to start Monday night’s game. They gave up a field goal, but then had a good run-heavy drive, controlling the line of scrimmage. Braelon Allen seemed to have a touchdown run, but just before he crossed the goal line Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones had a great punchout, causing a fumble. The Dolphins recovered. It’s the type of mistake bad teams make.
That seemed to sap whatever confidence the Jets might have had. They looked poor the rest of the first half. Darren Waller, playing in his first game since the end of the 2023 season after he came out of retirement and was traded to Miami, scored a 4-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-goal for a 10-0 Dolphins lead. It was one of two touchdown catches for Waller. The Jets’ offense couldn’t score against a Dolphins defense that looked like one of the worst in the NFL through a couple of weeks.

Then the Jets fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half. It’s going to be a long season for Glenn and the Jets.

Dolphins pull away
The Dolphins have had their own frustrations this season. They had a bad opener but were more competitive in their last two losses. It’s hard losing in the NFL every week, especially with speculation about job security being asked. Both teams needed a win, but the Dolphins are the ones that got it and now have a short break from the constant stress that comes with losing in the NFL.
Even when the Jets did something right, they couldn’t make it last. Justin Fields had a nice 43-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to finally get the Jets’ offense in the end zone. But then the Dolphins, without Hill, drove right back downfield and De’Von Achane scored on a touchdown run to restore Miami’s lead to 24-10.

The Jets had a touchdown taken away on an offensive pass interference call on Garrett Wilson, though that call was questionable at best. They made a fair catch at their own 3-yard line. The Jets had 13 penalties. It was a sloppy performance by a bad team. Glenn might turn the Jets around over time, but on Monday night they had all the telltale signs of a poorly coached team.
Monday night had to be disheartening. The Jets weren’t a threat against a team that was 0-3 heading into the game. This couldn’t have been the start Glenn was envisioning for his new job.
